"My lovely wife ..."

Dave Warnock responds to Jack Bridget Myers by incisively pointing out the invisibility of the single woman in the complementarian framework. If a woman is not someone's "lovely wife" then who is she? Dave also refers to Adrian Warnock's comments on how women in the US are serving their Lord by supporting their husbands by being "honouring and submissive." Gack!!!!

And not long ago I was teaching my lovely wife (who is Italian, we've been married three months now) that "lovely" means a lot more than "beautiful". When I call her "lovely" I mean that I love her for her mind and her spirit, including her leadership qualities, as well as for her body. That may not be what Adrian means, but...

By the way, Adrian dedicates his book "Raised with Christ" (I have just received a review copy) "To my wonderful wife Andrée". That's perhaps a better word than "lovely" for a wife.

Just for the record, Suzanne, my full legal name is "Bridget Jack Meyers." Hearing it as "Jack Bridget Meyers" is kind of jarring. :)

Bridget,

So sorry!! Ouch!

Peter,

Nothing wrong with saying "lovely wife" and so on. But the thing is that some of us are just folks. So it isn't good to spiritualize this role. It's the spiritual implications that irk, not the emotional.

And many many women over 50 are alone because their men have left looking for younger "lovelier" models ...
